2. Chlorhexidine

Chlorhexidine or chlorhexidine gluconate is an antiseptic that is used as a disinfectant. It is used for sterilizing surgical equipment before the surgical operation and disinfecting the skin. It comes in the form of liquid or powder and can also be used to treat mouth infections and prevent dental plague. Also, it can be used as an additive in antiperspirants, creams, and toothpaste.

According to WHO, chlorhexidine is categorized in a list of essential medicines as one of the safest and most effective medicines needed in the medical world. When mixed with alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl  alcohol),  it  can prove  effective  against a  wide  range  of microorganisms, fungi,  and bacteria.

3. Quats NH4 derivatives.

Quaternary ammonium or quats are positively charged polyatomic ions belonging to the alkyl or aryl group. One of its derivatives quats ammonium salts and other quaternary compounds are used as surfactants and disinfectants and have shown to have antimicrobial activity.

4. Hydrogen peroxides for eliminating some bacterial spores.

Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound in its purest form that is used as an antiseptic, an oxidizer, and as a bleaching agent. It is an example of sporocides that is used for eliminating bacterial spores. It acts as a disinfectant and used for sterilizing surgical tools and is very effective against 
viruses as well .

The use of some alcohol-free hand sanitizers hasn't really been in line with WHO and CDC's health vision. This is because these products do not offer maximum protection against infections. Concerns regarding the safety of the chemicals used in these alcohol-free hand sanitizers have often led the WHO and CDC to discredit their uses. Like the triclosan, for example, if this antimicrobial compound is used, it may interfere with the proper functioning of the endocrine system.

The CDC recommends washing your hands with soap and water always, especially if your hands are visibly soiled, after you have used the restroom and before, during, and after food preparation. Wash your hands for at least 20 - 40 seconds with warm water and soap. For additional protection, CDC also recommends the use of hand sanitizer .

Hand sanitizers may no pose any threat to the skin, but they may strip the epidermis of oil, which will result in loss of skin lipid.

●     ⅓ cup of aloe vera gel.
●    ⅔ cup of Isopropyl or rubbing alcohol with 91% purity at the minimum.
●     Spoon.
●     Mixing bowl.
●     Funnel.
●     Container or bottle.


1.  Add aloe vera gel and isopropyl alcohol into a mixing bowl.
2.  Use spoon to stir until it’s evenly mixed.

To add an essential oil, add 6 - 10 drops of any one in your mixture, depending on the quantity of hand sanitizer that you need and stir vigorously.

You can make gel hand sanitzers with grain alcohol as well like vodka. All you need is a bottle of
190-proof grain alcohol, aloe vera gel, any essential oil, bottle or container, mixing bowl, and spoon.


1.  Add 59 ml and 30 ml of grain alcohol and aloe vera gel respectively into a mixing bowl. Ratio of alcohol to gel must be 2:1.
2.  Add 10 drops of your preferred essential oil and stir with spoon until ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
3.  Pout the mixture over a funnel from the bowl into the bottle and cover well.
4.  Your hand sanitizer is ready for use.

In the absence of aloe vera gel, you can use coconut oil as substitute.

How to Make Liquid Alcohol-based Sanitizers

The liquid or the spray form is the most used type of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. It’s simple to make and will take roughly 15 - 20 minutes to prepare .
